Secured communities staffed and trained for dementia, with a specific state certification on top of the base license.
When it's the right level
Memory care is generally the right place to look when the issue is
memory loss that has started to affect safety. Care needs change, though, and many communities are licensed for more
than one level — what happens when needs increase is the single best
question to ask on any tour.
How it's licensed
Memory care usually isn't a license of its own — it's a certification layered on top of one. In Oregon it is a memory-care endorsement on an assisted-living or residential-care license, carrying its own staffing and dementia-training rules. Ask any community to show you the endorsement, not just the brochure page about their 'memory neighborhood'.
